Bio
“Luke Meyer is a painter and experimenter in Milwaukee who works to create accessible art which encourages and enables conversation around important subject matter such as suicide awareness. Drawing on inspiration from early collaborations between Keith Haring and young graffiti artist LA 2, he utilizes the line and symbols to spark dialogue around today’s prominent social and humanitarian issues. While he primarily works painting on large canvases, he continues to experiment by developing his own paint formulas, painting on lamps and ceramics, and learning to share his process through high-speed videos.
In a recent collaboration with ALL GOODS, a local streetwear and vintage clothing store, he released a tote bag targeting suicide and overdose awareness. Luke is multifaceted in the arts by experimentation and multidisciplinary as an engineer by education. Through his residency at 20 Ton Studios, he also collaborates with fellow residents to screen-print, photograph art and products, and create art promoting media. Luke is deeply integrated with the network of the underground Milwaukee creative community. Knowing many street artists, his affinity towards graffiti gives the Milwaukee cityscape a different kind of meaning and layers it with a certain language and history that seems to elude most. It is in this respect and admiration for real public art that one can see how Luke might imagine his art in the everyday landscape. Through this, he can help draw us into conversations necessary for bringing those often overlooked or ignored into the spotlight. “

Artist Statement
My artwork is an experiment in composing powerful symbols, energetic linework, and representative shapes creating statements of support for important subject matter such as mental health, suicide awareness, and overdose prevention. With every composition, I task my work with providing an opportunity for the viewer to reflect on their experiences, connect with others, support movements, and heal through creative expression.
By adopting an approachable color palette and familiar language of lines, I strive to allow interactive accessibility for all. It’s all about understanding and connecting through participation and conversation.
